Founders Dining CircleHomeAbout us
Why we fight for founders.
The greatest force in business is not capital and it is not code. It is a founder who refuses to quit.
We are two of those founders. One of us grew up on the South Side of Chicago. The other grew up behind the counter of his father's shop in Amman, Jordan. Neither of us came out of ground that was supposed to grow anything. We built anyway, and now we help founders build what only they can build, without selling their soul to do it.
Co-founder
Dr. Stephen J. Crawford
Stephen grew up in Englewood, where he learned to tell gunfire from fireworks before he learned his times tables. Around the fifth grade he decided he was not smart enough to read a whole book. He has since written five. What carried him out was one belief: you do not have to be a product of your environment. You can be the thing that changes it.
After years leading youth programs in the nonprofit world, he learned that the fastest way to transform a community is to equip the people who build businesses inside it. For more than twenty years he has worked with roughly four thousand companies across thirty-three countries, from Medtronic and the U.S. Air Force to family restaurants that could not make payroll. The lesson is the same at every scale. People do not need more information. They need transformation.
Co-founder
Ouss Edwan
At eighteen, Ouss was wholesaling phone cards to one hundred and thirty-seven shops across Amman, introducing himself as the sales rep so nobody would dismiss the kid who owned the company. He landed in Sydney in 2010 without a word of English and has started over four times since. Today he runs a premium dessert company in Sydney and Dubai with no lease and no fixed overheads, along with several other businesses.
Ouss builds. Stephen turns what founders build into systems others can follow. Ouss is the proof it can be done from nothing. Stephen is the method for doing it on purpose.
Why now
Trillions of dollars in business ownership is about to change hands as founders retire without a plan, and private equity is already buying up the dental practices, vet clinics, and trades. We are not anti-private-equity. We are pro-founder. We work with the visionary who is tired of winging it, the leader burned out from being the bottleneck, and the owner who needs help without losing control.
What we believe
- We believe entrepreneurship is an act of courage before it is an act of commerce. It is the fastest road out of a hard place that has ever been built.
- We believe no trade is beneath honour. The tiler, the dessert maker, the woman who cuts hair in a rented chair. Every economy of one is a vote against a world owned by the few.
- We refuse to accept a world where builders are bought out before they are built up.
- We refuse to despise small beginnings. Every fire started as a spark somebody could have stepped on.
- We commit to building businesses that can be run without us, led without us, and inherited without us, so they can never be taken from us.
- We commit to standing firm when the cheque is large, and if we ever sell, to selling on our terms.
- We commit to lifting the next founder as we climb. Every one of us takes a young builder with us.
- We know the game is tilted. We play anyway, because the alternative is to vanish.
We are not for sale.
